Cadillac Advances Its Formula One Ambitions with FIA Approval
Cadillac is poised to enhance its presence in the world of Formula One, having received key approval from the FIA regarding its F1 power unit initiative. This milestone indicates significant progress for the iconic American brand as it prepares for its competitive debut.
The newly formed entity, TWG GM Performance Power Units LLC, a collaboration between TWG Motorsports and General Motors, has been authorized by the FIA to participate in the championship starting in 2029. Cadillac, planning to enter the grid as the 11th team in 2026, will utilize Ferrari power units during the initial years before transitioning to its own power unit from GM.
Plans are already in motion for the development and testing of the prototype engine, with the establishment of a dedicated facility for GM Performance Power Units near General Motors’ Charlotte Technical Center expected to be operational by 2026.
The significance of this approval lies in Cadillac’s commitment to establishing a fully U.S.-based Formula One team by 2029. TWG Motorsports, which previously operated under the Andretti Autosport umbrella, has expressed intentions to include at least one American driver in its two-car lineup.
Russ O’Blenes, the newly appointed CEO of this venture, emphasized the importance of FIA’s approval in their pursuit of creating an American-manufactured F1 power unit. “This is a pivotal moment for us as we work towards bringing innovative engineering to the grid,” O’Blenes stated.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem acknowledged the lengthy process leading to this approval, stating, “The entry of an eleventh team into the FIA Formula One World Championship was envisioned to broaden the grid and introduce fresh talent into our sport. The challenges faced during this journey, including the transition of Michael Andretti to an ambassadorial role, ultimately validated our efforts.”
He further remarked, “The approval of GM Performance Power Units LLC. as a recognized supplier for the Championship starting in 2029 represents a significant advancement in the global reach of Formula 1 and reflects the rising interest from notable automotive manufacturers like General Motors.”
Ben Sulayem also highlighted the shared values of innovation and sustainability between the FIA and General Motors, stating, “This partnership reinforces our aim to expand motorsport’s accessibility and inclusivity, welcoming new manufacturers while advancing technology and engaging with a wider, diverse audience of fans.”
