FIA Responds to Suspicions of Formula 1 Ride Height Adjustment Tactics

As the United States Grand Prix approaches, a wave of suspicion regarding a potential maneuver to adjust the ride height of F1 cars during parc ferme conditions has led the FIA to take decisive action. Recent discussions among various teams and regulatory officials have focused on concerns that one team may have engineered a method to adjust the front bib clearance between qualifying sessions and the race.

Theoretically, the ability to raise or lower the front bib, even marginally, could yield significant advantages. Such adjustments would allow teams to optimize their cars for the varying demands of low-fuel single laps compared to the heavier setups required for longer race distances.

However, any modifications made during this crucial period would contravene existing technical regulations. Specifically, F1’s rules prohibit changes to the aerodynamic configuration of cars—beyond limited alterations to the front wing—once they enter the parc ferme stage.

According to Article 40.2 of the Technical Regulations, only minor adjustments to the aerodynamic setup of the front wing are permissible, stating: “No parts may be added, removed or replaced.” Additionally, Article 40.9 emphasizes that “a competitor may not modify any part on the car.” These regulations are designed to minimize the risk of unauthorized adjustments, ensuring that visible tools are required for any changes during the lock-up period.

The ongoing debate is fueled by reports suggesting that a team has unveiled a design allowing for front bib clearance adjustments based on changes made from within the cockpit. This could potentially be carried out by a mechanic during the car’s standard assessments between qualifying and the race, remaining undetected by those monitoring the activity.

To alleviate concerns, teams have been reminded of their obligations to upload detailed design specifications of their vehicles to the FIA servers, which grants all teams access to open-source component information. Recognizing the gravity of these allegations, the FIA is poised to amend enforcement measures starting this weekend’s event in Austin.

While the governing body has yet to receive definitive proof of any team utilizing such a system, it has affirmed its commitment to vigilance in upholding the integrity of the sport. To that end, changes in inspection procedures for front bib characteristics will be implemented, which may involve securing seals on devices that could affect the T-tray angle.

An FIA representative stated to Autosport: “Any adjustment to the front bib clearance during parc ferme conditions is strictly prohibited by the regulations. While we have not received any indication of any team employing such a system, the FIA remains vigilant in our ongoing efforts to enhance the policing of the sport.”

The implications of these developments come at a critical time, as the F1 season heads into its final stretch with six races still to be contested and both championship titles fiercely contested.
