Shaila-Ann Rao Returns to FIA as Presidential Advisor
Shaila-Ann Rao has been reappointed to the FIA, taking on the role of Presidential Advisor as confirmed by the world governing body for motorsport.
This appointment marks another chapter in Rao’s career, having previously served as the FIA’s legal director from 2016 to 2018, and briefly as interim secretary general for motorsport in 2022.
Rao’s return follows her tenure at Mercedes and fills the position left by Peter Bayer, known for his role in the investigation surrounding the contentious conclusion of the 2021 Formula 1 championship.
Rao was involved in the cost cap investigation concerning Red Bull, a decision that generated debate given her prior connections to competitors like Mercedes. She departed at the end of the 2022 season amidst reports alleging misconduct against FIA President Ben Sulayem.
According to an FIA statement, “FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem has appointed Shaila-Ann Rao as a Presidential Advisor. Ms. Rao will provide advice on various regulatory and commercial issues associated with the seven FIA World Championships, effective May 1, 2025.”
Rao, a dual-qualified lawyer both as an English Solicitor and a French Lawyer admitted to the Paris Bar, brings substantial experience in global motorsport to her new role.
“Ms. Rao’s appointment comes during a crucial period for the FIA as the organization undertakes significant transformations and financial reforms, reflected in projected operational results for 2024 of €2.2 million, a stark contrast to the deficit of -€24 million inherited in 2021,” the statement noted.
In her advisory capacity, Rao will assist Ben Sulayem, who has been mired in controversy as he aims for re-election as FIA president. Recently, he has sought to address issues such as driver conduct and has faced criticism regarding progress on the governance aspects of the new F1 Concorde Agreement, along with numerous high-profile resignations attributed to clashes with him.
Two years prior, allegations of sexism and bullying against Ben Sulayem involved Rao, who now resumes her collaboration with the president.
“I look forward to advising the FIA President across the FIA World Championships and building upon the progress achieved during his tenure in reinforcing the regulatory and commercial frameworks of the Championships,” Rao stated upon her reappointment.
“The FIA occupies a distinctive role in global sports, and I am excited to support the organization and help the FIA President foster a stronger future for motorsport.”
Ben Sulayem expressed enthusiasm regarding Rao’s return, stating, “I am delighted to welcome back Shaila-Ann Rao to the FIA. Her exemplary track record in global motorsport will undoubtedly be a tremendous asset as we work towards enhancing the regulatory and commercial structures across all FIA World Championships, benefiting drivers, teams, and member clubs.”
“She will also offer valuable advice on matters concerning all FIA World Championship promoters,” he added.
