Christian Horner Addresses FIA Scrutiny Over Red Bull’s Front Bib Adjuster

Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull Racing, has voiced his concerns regarding the FIA’s recent actions targeting his team’s front bib adjuster. He suggests that the heightened scrutiny is a result of “paranoia” among rival teams rather than legitimate concerns about compliance with regulations.

During the current race weekend, Red Bull caught the spotlight after the FIA intensified its protocols aimed at preventing teams from modifying their front bib clearance during parc ferme periods. This move follows allegations from competitors that Red Bull may have tampered with settings between qualifying sessions and races, an act that would violate regulations.

The FIA has responded by placing seals on the front bib adjuster used by Red Bull, a measure that Horner claims is unwarranted. “There has been some grumbling from one of our rivals,” Horner stated during an interview with Sky Sports. “The FIA’s role is to investigate these concerns, but the adjuster has been an open-source component for the last several years, and the FIA has always approved its use.”

The Red Bull team is expected to implement modifications to its vehicle before the season concludes. However, Horner maintains that the accusations aimed at his team regarding cheating are baseless. He elaborated on the complexity of altering the front bib setting, which requires significant disassembly of the car, including the removal of bodywork and pedals, and the use of a specialized tool by a mechanic.

“Every car has a means to adjust the front bib,” Horner explained. “Ours is located in front of the footwell, and has been there for over three years. However, accessing it involves considerable effort; the pedals and several other components must be removed first.” He dismissed the notion that drivers could simply operate the adjuster at will, clarifying that no easy mechanism exists for such adjustments.

Horner further contended that it would be illogical for Red Bull to rely on a complicated system like the front bib adjuster when there are far simpler adjustments available on the car, such as the rear roll bar. “Modifying the rear roll bar is significantly easier than the front bib adjustment,” he remarked, highlighting the practicality of their engineering choices.

Additionally, Horner suggested that the increased focus on Red Bull’s adjustments may be a strategic move by competitors to divert attention away from their own challenges. He remarked, “Sometimes, creating a diversion can be a tactic to shift the spotlight from issues within one’s own team.”

The unfolding situation underscores the competitive tensions within the sport as teams, while striving for innovation and speed, continue to navigate the stringent regulatory landscape set by the FIA.
