Shrimp Boat Runs Aground at Beverly Beach, Drawing Crowds
A 50-foot shrimp vessel, the Miss Montie, found itself stranded on the sands of Beverly Beach, just north of Flagler Beach, this past Sunday. The unexpected sight quickly captivated beachgoers and locals alike, who gathered to witness the incident and ponder the circumstances surrounding it.
According to Coast Guard Marine Science Technician Brendan Blackwell, the crew had already been evacuated from the boat prior to the grounding, a move that he noted happened the day before, on Saturday. Specifics regarding the crew’s removal were not provided.
The Miss Montie, identified as operating out of Mayport — evidenced by the port name displayed on its stern — contained several hundred gallons of diesel fuel when it ran aground.
Blackwell assessed the situation at the beach, stating, “We are just making sure that everything looks like it’s buttoned up, the vessel is still upright, it’s not capsizing or anything. It’s a steel hull, so it shouldn’t fall apart overnight or anything crazy like that.”
Efforts were underway by the vessel’s owner to arrange for the boat’s removal from its precarious position on the beach.
The Flagler Beach Fire Department reported being dispatched to the scene around 6:05 p.m. They confirmed that the area, specifically near 2480 N. Oceanshore Blvd, had been searched, and control of the site was subsequently handed over to law enforcement.
As news of the grounded shrimp boat spread, curious onlookers flocked to the beach. Many took pictures and selfies, capturing the unusual sight as waves lapped against the boat’s hull.
Local resident Jeff Olkowski made the trip from Ormond Beach with his family to witness the spectacle. He remarked, “It is pretty wild to see it out on the beach. It’s not something that you see every day.”
