Filip Babicz Sets New Speed Climbing Record on Matterhorn
Polish climber Filip Babicz has embarked on an impressive speed climbing challenge, scaling all four ridges of the renowned Matterhorn in an astonishing time of 7 hours, 43 minutes, and 43 seconds. This remarkable feat showcases not only his climbing prowess but also his innovative approach to tackling one of the Alps’ most iconic peaks.
Beginning and ending his climb at the Orionde refuge on the mountain’s Italian side, Babicz executed his ascent without any external assistance. His route involved climbing two of the ridges upward and descending the other two, tracing out a distinctive “8” shape on the Matterhorn’s formidable face.
“The only exchange of equipment and supplies took place at the foot of the mountain between the first ascent and the commencement of the second,” Babicz explained, highlighting the logistical challenges he faced during the undertaking.
Designing a Pyramidal Ascent
Babicz’s project was not only a physical challenge but also a tribute to the mountain itself. “This project is inspired by the pyramidal shape and aesthetic of the mountain… The first principle was that the track should emphasize it,” he noted, reflecting on the artistic intent behind his carefully planned route.
Detailed Ascent and Descent Times
Babicz’s journey up the mountain included several significant milestones:
- He first climbed the Furggen Ridge via the Strapiombi, completing the ascent in 1 hour and 38 minutes. He asserts this is a record time for the ridge, marking it as his first free solo climb of this section.
- Following his ascent, Babicz quickly descended the Hornli Ridge, the standard route, in just 40 minutes.
- Next, he tackled the challenging Zmutt Ridge, climbing from the base at 3,410 meters to the Swiss summit. He accomplished this in a record time of 2 hours and 18 minutes.
- Finally, he made his descent via the Lion Ridge, located in Italian territory, reaching the Colle del Leone in 37 minutes.
Known for his expertise in speed climbing, Babicz has a track record of fast solo ascents on various renowned routes globally, with a particular emphasis on the Alps. He has previously made rapid ascents of the complete Puterey Ridge to Mont Blanc, as well as climbs on Piz Badile and Grand Capucin. Furthermore, he has demonstrated his skills as a dry-tooler, achieving feats such as the first repetition of Bring da Ruckus, which is regarded by many as Scotland’s most challenging mixed winter route.
Filip Babicz’s latest accomplishment not only contributes to his distinguished climbing portfolio but also adds a new chapter to the storied history of Matterhorn ascents, inspiring climbers around the world to push the boundaries of what is physically possible in the vertical realm.
