Gun Discovery at W.T. Chipman Middle School Raises Concerns
Officials from Lake Forest School District confirmed that a firearm was located on the floor of a staff restroom at W.T. Chipman Middle School in Harrington. This incident occurred on the evening of April 9, as outlined in a letter from Superintendent Steven Lucas.
An employee conducting routine maintenance found the weapon in the male staff restroom, located within the faculty lounge. Following the discovery, an inquiry determined that the firearm was registered to an individual with authorization to carry a weapon on school grounds.
Local authorities, in a statement via their Facebook page, clarified that the gun did not belong to the school resource officer, and emphasized that there was no immediate threat to students during the incident.
This event is part of a troubling trend involving firearm-related incidents in Delaware schools. Just a day after the gun was found, a member of the Culture and Climate Team at Aspira High School near Newark accidentally discharged a firearm within the school premises, resulting in injuries to the bus driver who was armed. Fortunately, no students were reported to be in danger during this incident either.

In recent months, Delaware schools have witnessed a series of accidental discharges involving firearms. Notably, in November, a gun carried by a constable at Stanton Middle School fired off in a hallway. A few weeks later, another incident occurred in a staff room within the Milford School District. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported in any of these incidents.
