New Series “Étoile” by the Palladinos: A Dance of Comedy and Dramatic Ballet
Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, renowned for their work on the acclaimed series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” are set to debut their new ballet comedy “Étoile.” This marks a significant return for the couple, who have captivated audiences with their unique narrative style. Recent glimpses into the series showcase the talent of ballet dancers from both New York City and Paris, as seen in the first trailer that has generated considerable excitement.
At the heart of “Étoile” lies a compelling storyline: two artistic directors from prestigious ballet companies devise a daring plan to revitalize their struggling institutions. With both companies at risk, the directors agree to exchange their star performers between New York and Paris.
The series depicts the challenges faced by principal dancers, with Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg portraying the artistic heads who must persuade their top talent to shift companies. Lou de Laâge steps into the role of Cheyenne, a seasoned Parisian étoile who grapples with the challenges of melding into the New York dance environment.
The narrative takes a humorous turn as the ballet companies navigate the cultural adjustments of their dancers, while also managing intricate personalities. It ultimately raises the stakes, as the directors must not only preserve their art forms but also engage with audiences amid the complexities of ego clashes and artistic rivalry.

The ensemble cast includes Yanic Truesdale, a beloved figure from “Gilmore Girls,” who will make a recurring appearance. Additionally, Tiler Peck, a principal dancer from the New York City Ballet, suggests a vibrant connection to the world of ballet by appearing in the trailer adorned in a classic Swan Lake tutu. The cast is further enriched by talents such as Gideon Glick, David Alvarez, Ivan du Pontavice, Taïs Vinolo, David Haig LaMay Zhang, and Simon Callow, forming a diverse and dynamic group of performers for this original series.
This initiative is not the Palladinos’ first foray into dance-themed narratives; they previously created the ABC Family series “Bunheads,” which starred the talented Sutton Foster. With “Étoile,” they introduce a lighter, comedic layer to the traditionally serious realm of ballet.
The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, with Sherman-Palladino, Palladino, and Dhana Rivera Gilbert serving as executive producers. Scott Ellis joins as co-executive producer, further enhancing the project’s creative leadership. Excitingly, “Étoile” has already secured a two-season commitment from the streaming platform.
“Well, I guess that plan for early retirement will have to wait. Instead, we’ve decided to embark on an international journey with an unbelievable group of players and the most talented ballet dancers in the world,” shared Sherman-Palladino and Palladino in a statement. “We will sleep when we’re dead.”
