Fitbit, now under Google’s umbrella, is actively addressing a potential safety concern related to battery overheating in its popular smartwatches, the Sense and Versa 3. In response to the situation, Google has developed a firmware update aimed at mitigating the risks associated with these devices. Affected users will be notified about the update and their eligibility for compensation.
Reports have emerged highlighting Google’s warning regarding the risk of battery overheating in the Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 models. The tech giant identified that a limited number of users may be impacted to varying degrees.
In a statement regarding the firmware issue, Google emphasized that it poses a potential hazard to users, necessitating an immediate update to the devices. The company detailed that this update is designed to enhance battery stability and decrease the likelihood of overheating. However, the update appears to come at a cost, as it is expected to reduce the overall battery life, requiring users to charge their devices more frequently.
Affected users will receive notifications through both the Fitbit app and via email directly from Google regarding the necessary update.
To assist those impacted, Google has provided a registration form where users of the Fitbit Sense or Versa 3 can apply for eligibility to receive a compensation of $50. Should users require the firmware update, it will be rolled out to them along with the compensation if they meet the criteria.
This incident is not the first time Fitbit has faced overheating issues. A previous situation concerning its Ionic smartwatch line saw the company recalling nearly one million units due to serious safety concerns regarding overheating batteries, which posed a burn risk to users.
Following that incident, Fitbit faced legal challenges, with one lawsuit emerging just two months later, alleging that users had suffered injuries from overheated devices. The lawsuit highlighted firsthand accounts from users who had experienced burns as a result of the overheating batteries.
In light of these past issues, Google seems to be taking proactive measures to prevent a repetition of the previous year’s concerns, aiming to safeguard users and restore confidence in the safety of Fitbit’s products.
