Recent data reveal a troubling picture for education in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, with low NAEP scores and ongoing absenteeism underscoring significant challenges. Despite these obstacles, there are some hopeful indicators for the future.
In a discussion with Paul E. Peterson, Thomas Kane, the Walter H. Gale Professor of Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education, emphasized the need for school districts to shift their focus from immediate recovery efforts to developing sustainable long-term strategies that enhance student learning outcomes.
The most recent Education Recovery Scorecard has been released, providing insights into the state of education as districts navigate the aftermath of the pandemic.
Kane highlighted these findings during the Program on Education Policy and Governance’s 2025 Spring Colloquium Series, where experts gathered to discuss the ongoing effects of the pandemic on educational institutions.
