A recent search by a team of divers has led to the discovery of two vehicles submerged in Plantation canals, along with what are believed to be human remains associated with two separate missing person cases. The search initially aimed to locate Doris Wurst and her three-year-old daughter, who disappeared in 1974.

On November 12, 1974, Doris Wurst, 35, and her young daughter were reported missing from their home, according to a news release from the Plantation Police Department. While authorities did not publicly name the missing individuals at the time, their description aligns with that of Doris and Caren Wurst, as confirmed by the dive team that announced their findings.

Sunshine State Sonar, a volunteer organization focused on locating missing persons in South Florida, commenced their search for the mother and daughter in June 2023. Over the weekend, their sonar technology revealed a 1960s Chevrolet Impala in a canal, leading to the recovery of skeletal remains thought to belong to an adult and a small child.

The dive team shared video footage of their mission, documenting the recovery of the vehicle and the search efforts.

Following the discovery, authorities reached out to the next of kin regarding the potential identification of the remains, emphasizing that DNA testing will be undertaken for confirmation.

During the course of their search for the Wursts, the divers also detected another vehicle approximately 22 feet deep in the same canal. With the help of the Plantation police, they retrieved the vehicle’s license plate, which was linked to a missing person case from 2004.

Sunshine State Sonar reported that divers identified human remains inside a silver Buick LeSabre, which belonged to Bernie Novick. Novick, an 83-year-old World War II veteran, had been reported missing from Lauderdale West two decades prior, bringing some closure to his family after years of uncertainty.

Joey Novick, Bernie’s son, expressed his emotions regarding the find, noting their attempts to move forward with their lives following a memorial service held years earlier. He reflected on the trauma of the situation, sharing, “I really put everything behind us with closure, but I always imagined this is how it happened.”

Sunshine State Sonar continues to work alongside law enforcement in Florida, utilizing advanced technology to search for missing individuals and vehicles believed to be submerged in bodies of water.
