Classes at Florida State University (FSU) are set to restart on Monday, just four days following a tragic shooting incident on campus that resulted in two fatalities and six injuries, according to university officials.
In a move aimed at accommodating students during this challenging time, FSU has allowed instructors the flexibility to conduct classes either remotely or in-person, depending on the needs of each course. Attendance policies have been adjusted; students will not face any penalties regarding their grades for choosing not to attend classes in person, as emphasized by FSU President Richard McCullough in his communication to both students and faculty.
Furthermore, students facing difficulties in completing their coursework are permitted to request an incomplete grade, reflecting the university’s commitment to supporting their academic journeys. McCullough highlighted the diversity of responses students might have to the situation, stating, “We want everyone to receive the support and help they need. For some students that may mean not going back into the classroom. For others, the idea of community and gathering, as well as the opportunity to focus on academics, may be beneficial. There is no single right answer for everyone.”
Context of the Incident
The shooting took place when the assailant, identified as the stepson of a sheriff’s deputy, arrived on the university grounds approximately an hour before the attack. Reports indicate that he lingered near a parking garage before moving about the campus, discharging a handgun shortly before lunchtime. Within a span of approximately four minutes, law enforcement officers confronted the 20-year-old shooter, Phoenix Ikner, who was also a student at FSU, and subsequently shot him.
The victims of the shooting have been identified as Robert Morales, a dining coordinator for the university, and Tiru Chabba, an executive associated with food service provider Aramark, according to statements made by their families and legal representatives.
