PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Dramatic video captured at Otter Rock highlights the tumultuous ocean conditions along the Oregon Coast on Thursday, ahead of the arrival of several seasonal king tides predicted to impact the Pacific Northwest this weekend.
While the official king tides are expected to commence on Friday, KOIN 6 Meteorologist Josh Cozart cautions that these unusually high tides build gradually due to the gravitational influences of the sun and moon.
“There’s a gradual increase leading up to the King Tide levels,” Cozart explained.
Mike Peeples, a resident of Oregon, filmed the powerful waves just before 11 a.m. from the Inn at Otter Crest, showcasing the rising tide that tossed debris and logs thrown about like toys as waves crashed against the coastal cliffs.
Cozart issued a warning regarding the increased risk of sneaker waves, making this season particularly treacherous. The National Weather Service (NWS) strongly advises beachgoers to maintain a safe distance from large pieces of driftwood and debris located near the surf zone or below established high-water lines.
“The rugged and isolated coastline of the Northwest presents unique hazards where sneaker waves, beach litter, severe tides, and frigid water temperatures converge. Even a simple walk along the beach can become dangerous if one is not vigilant,” the NWS noted. “In these regions, understanding the potential dangers is crucial, as cold water can be life-threatening upon contact.”
