Impacts of Hurricane Helene on Florida’s Wildlife

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, several species of wildlife, particularly alligators, turtles, and even sharks, have been observed in unexpected locations throughout Florida. As flooding caused by the storm displaces these animals, residents are urged to remain vigilant and adopt a cautious approach when encountering wildlife.

Following the hurricane’s landfall on September 27, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office utilized a drone to document an alligator drifting by San Marco Road in Southwest Florida, as reported by ABC-affiliate WZVN.

Such storms are known to disrupt animal habitats, forcing creatures into areas they typically would not inhabit. According to Lauren Claerbout of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), “Alligators may be seen more often in flooded areas near marshes or swamps after a hurricane or tropical storm.”

Dispelling Myths: Displaced Alligators and Safety Concerns

Hurricanes often result in alligators being spotted in residential backyards and on golf courses. These sightings, while alarming, are not unheard of even during less severe weather conditions. The murky waters created by flooding can complicate visibility and pose challenges for residents trying to identify such wildlife. Despite these concerns, Claerbout indicated that since Hurricane Helene made landfall, there have been no reported incidents of alligator bites.

“Serious injuries involving alligators are quite rare in Florida,” she noted, asserting that it is essential for individuals to maintain their distance if they encounter an alligator. “The best way to stay safe and ensure the well-being of wildlife is to remain observant and keep your distance.”

Research conducted by the University of Florida highlights that hurricanes do not correlate with an increase in alligator attacks; in fact, the displaced gators themselves could face heightened risk. In rural areas, if an alligator wanders into a yard, it could become a target for those looking to eliminate it, as highlighted by Levy County Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Tummond.

Understanding Alligator Behavior During Storms

As storms approach, alligators are known to sense changes in barometric pressure, prompting them to seek shelter. However, rather than retreating, one adventurous alligator was seen exploring a neighborhood in Lakeland, near Tampa, even approaching a front door, according to a report from The Miami Herald.

While wildlife trappers do respond to reports of alligators in residential areas, they only take action on animals deemed a nuisance. Claerbout explained, “An alligator is often considered a nuisance if it is at least 4 feet long and poses a potential threat to people or pets.” Once caught, some alligators may be processed for their hides and meat, while others might be relocated to farms or zoos.

Wider Impacts on Wildlife

Hurricane Helene’s flooding hasn’t only displaced alligators; reports also surfaced of unusual sightings from other wildlife. In Lakes Park, a young bull shark was spotted swimming in a pond, an occurrence attributed to the storm’s disruption. Bull sharks are capable of thriving in both saltwater and freshwater, which may have allowed it to navigate the floodwaters from a nearby creek. According to Susannah Cogburn, a graduate student at the Water School at Florida Gulf Coast University, the shark should find enough food in the lake, stating, “As the only shark in the lake, it seems likely to have plenty of food available.”

Additionally, a manatee found stranded at MacDill Air Force Base received assistance from Fish and Wildlife Rescuers, reflecting the broader impact of the storm on various species. Residents who come across distressed wildlife are encouraged to contact the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922 for help.
