Ford Introduces Specialty Adapter for Tesla Supercharger Access
Ford is set to release its own branded adapter designed specifically for its electric vehicle (EV) customers to access Tesla Superchargers. This initiative reflects the automaker’s commitment to enhancing the charging experience for its EV users. Starting today, the new adapter will be available alongside the existing adapter produced by Tesla, catering to those who are still waiting for a complimentary model.
The adapters will be manufactured in collaboration with Lectron, a company specializing in EV charging equipment. Lectron has previously developed its own NACS to CCS adapters, known as the “Vortex.” However, the company faced challenges earlier when it had to recall its adapters due to a design issue that could cause them to unlatch during charging. This incident raised concerns over safety and reliability, prompting the recall.
In a recent interview on State of Charge, Lectron CEO Christopher Maiwald confirmed that the design flaw has since been addressed, ensuring improved functionality for future adapters. Ford spokesperson Eddie Fernandez also clarified in communication with The Verge that the new adapters are independent from those which Ford had previously recommended customers discontinue use. “The noted replacement adapters affected as part of that customer satisfaction program were a small portion of the overall supply,” Fernandez stated, indicating that the bulk of their offerings remain reliable.
In line with its commitment to support EV adoption, Ford has recently launched its Power Promise campaign, aimed at assisting potential EV buyers who are hesitant about transitioning to electric vehicles. This program includes the provision of a complimentary home charger accompanied by standard installation, making it easier for customers to integrate EV ownership into their lives.
