Let’s travel back to 2005, a time when technology was markedly different. The iPod dominated the music scene, while the iPhone was just a couple of years away from its launch. The Motorola Razr was synonymous with coolness, and social media platforms like Facebook were still considered niche start-ups. For most, “the cloud” was merely a term related to atmospheric phenomena, and artificial intelligence was largely confined to the realm of science fiction.
This climate set the stage for my own entrepreneurial journey in the point-of-sale industry, which was still heavily reliant on traditional cash registers—functional yet basic. Our company sought to innovate by introducing iMac-based systems designed to streamline the checkout process and provide retailers with valuable insights into their operations.
Fast forward twenty years, and the technological landscape features AI, 5G connectivity, and constant social media engagement. Yet, as founders and business leaders, we must continually adapt to thrive in an increasingly complex environment marked by economic fluctuations, political instability, and rapid technological advancements.
Here are four critical lessons that have shaped my approach over the years.
1. Reassess Your Role Annually
Remaining pertinent in today’s market requires an open mindset regarding one’s role within the company.
In the early days, I took pride in being the principal software developer. However, as the business grew, I realized that I needed to pivot away from personal passions like coding and user interface design to facilitate organizational growth. Clinging too tightly to familiar roles can stifle progress; as a business expands, mastering new skills becomes essential for its leaders.
For example, I immersed myself in financial knowledge during our public offering, and most recently, I have been navigating the transition toward sustainable profitability.
2. Prioritize Company Culture
In many businesses, culture is often seen as an optional decorative element. However, today’s landscape illustrates how swiftly organizations can abandon diversity and inclusion strategies when faced with external pressures. Culture is critical and cannot be overlooked.
When launching our company in Montreal’s Gay Village, my initial team consisted solely of LGBTQ individuals. As we expanded, we embraced a diverse workforce and encouraged each member to express their true selves. It’s vital to recognize that every employee deserves equal opportunities based on their contributions, irrespective of their background.
In a recent survey, over 85% of our team reported feeling comfortable being authentic at work. A welcoming company culture attracts top talent and fosters a sense of belonging, motivating employees to engage deeply with the company’s mission.
3. Maintain Customer Connectivity
I cherish the memories of collaborating with our initial clients—a Mac dealership, a furniture store, and a wellness spa. Their input drove the creation of features that met their specific needs. Initially, establishing close relationships with customers is manageable, but maintaining that connection as the company grows can be challenging.
To avoid losing touch, company founders must prioritize direct engagement with customers. This creates an opportunity to gather valuable insights about their preferences and challenges rather than simply prescribing solutions. Understanding customer needs helps sustain product-market fit and prevents drift away from what truly matters to them.
We continue this practice today; for instance, I host Table Talks that bring our customers together to share ideas. At one recent gathering, a vintage store owner asked me about the effectiveness of social media ads. Her inquiry sparked new ideas for features we could develop to better track marketing effectiveness.
Placing customers at the core of operations can dramatically impact financial performance. Research shows that companies excelling in customer experience see revenue growth more than double that of their competitors.
4. Seek Inspiration Beyond Business
Despite my passion for entrepreneurship, I’ve discovered that nurturing other areas of interest is crucial for sustaining energy and creativity. Activities like engaging in visual arts or supporting conservation efforts are essential to my overall well-being.
Many leaders overlook this balance, allowing their businesses to monopolize their time and thoughts, which can lead to burnout. Building an enduring business requires a long-term mindset akin to a marathon, and pursuing interests outside of work can be revitalizing.
Moreover, engaging in personal passions can foster new insights that enhance business strategies. For example, my commitment to environmental causes propelled me to create documentaries, like the Emmy Award-winning Wildcat, focusing on endangered species like ocelots in the Amazon. This endeavor taught me valuable lessons about adaptability and effective storytelling—skills that I have since applied in my professional life.
Navigating a two-decade journey is no small feat, particularly in an era of rapid change. While there’s no guaranteed formula for longevity in business, the fundamental principles that served me well in 2005 remain relevant today as we look toward the future, facing new challenges and opportunities in 2025 and beyond.
