Tragic Loss: Former BYU Track Star Scott Mecham Dies Following Mountain Biking Accident
SALT LAKE CITY — Scott Mecham, a former track and field athlete at Brigham Young University (BYU), tragically died on Wednesday afternoon after a serious mountain biking accident. This information was confirmed through a press release from the university.
The incident occurred on Friday, September 12, when Mecham experienced what was described as a “bad crash” while biking with a friend. Following the accident, he was airlifted to the University of Utah Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Upon arrival, Mecham was later transferred to another facility for continued care after it was determined he had sustained a contusion to his cervical spinal cord, which resulted in significant paralysis below the neck. Medical professionals performed surgery to remove bone from his spine to accommodate swelling in the area.
Despite the efforts made by medical staff, Mecham succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Wednesday afternoon. He leaves behind his wife, Cierra, and their two daughters, Jayden and Parker.
Ed Eyestone, the director of track and field at BYU, expressed the university’s grief over Mecham’s passing. “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Scott Mecham,” Eyestone stated. “Scott had one of the most positive attitudes and strong work ethics that we have seen in the BYU track and field program. His teammates were made better by his example, and he became one of our best 400-meter hurdlers in school history. But even more inspiring than his athletic skills, his true strength was his character and ability to lead and inspire in his unassuming, humble way. We will miss you, Scott.”
Mecham was an active member of the BYU track team from 2017 to 2019, participating in 30 competitions over his collegiate career. He earned recognition as one of the top sprinters in the program’s history, recording the sixth-best outdoor 400-meter hurdles performance during the 2018 BYU Robison Invitational.
“Scott was a great athlete and an even more incredible person,” commented Kyle Grossarth, who coached Mecham in sprints. “He was a fierce competitor who always left everything out on the track.”
In light of the circumstances, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to provide assistance to Mecham’s family during this difficult time.
