Ron Carlivati Joins CBS’s Upcoming Daytime Drama Beyond the Gates
Ron Carlivati, a prominent figure in daytime television, is set to contribute to CBS’s new soap opera, Beyond the Gates, as a breakdown writer. His addition to the show’s writing team was confirmed on November 15, sparking discussion across various platforms, including industry-specific sites.
The creative vision behind Beyond the Gates is led by Michele Val Jean, who has an extensive background as a writer for General Hospital. Val Jean serves as the creator, executive producer, head writer, and showrunner. Joining her is Bob Guza Jr., known for creating Sunset Beach, who takes on the role of executive producer and co-head writer.
The writing team is bolstered by Susan Dansby from The Young and the Restless, who will act as the script editor, while Michael Montgomery will oversee continuity production. A diverse assortment of experienced scriptwriters, including Judy Tate, Danelle Paige, Jazmen Darnell Brown, Cheryl L. Davis, and Lynn Martin, also joins the team to craft the series.
Alongside Carlivati, the breakdown writers include notable names like Sara A. Bibel and Teresa Zimmerman from The Young and the Restless, Christopher Dunn from Days of Our Lives, and Gregori J. Martin, who is also the creator of The Bay.
The announcement of Carlivati’s new role has prompted a range of reactions from fans and commentators. While some expressed skepticism about his involvement, suggesting that it diminishes the show’s competitive threat to General Hospital, others praised the breadth of talent within the writing team, despite reservations about Carlivati and Guza’s past associations with other soap operas. Comments ranged from surprise at Carlivati’s career transition to supportive remarks about his longstanding contributions to the genre.
Carlivati’s career in daytime dramas includes notable stints at One Life to Live and General Hospital, culminating in his leadership as head writer for Days of Our Lives from January 2017 until July 2023, when he was succeeded by Paula Cwikly and Jeanne Marie Ford. He reflected on his departure from Days as a period filled with joy and fulfillment.
Beyond the Gates is set to premiere on February 24, 2025. The show will explore the intricacies of the Dupree family, a wealthy multi-generational household residing in a lavish Maryland suburb just outside Washington, D.C. The narrative promises to unfold a tapestry of hidden secrets and personal dramas set against a backdrop of privilege and societal observation. The ensemble cast features talents such as Tamara Tunie and Clifton Davis, portraying the family’s matriarch and patriarch, along with a diverse supporting cast.
