Niels Wittich’s Departure from F1 Race Directorship and the GT World Challenge Highlights
Niels Wittich recently commanded the final round of the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup held in Jeddah, following his unexpected exit from the FIA as a Formula 1 race director.
Having taken on the role in 2022, Wittich initially shared the responsibilities with Edoardo Freitas, stepping into the position after the controversial exit of Michael Masi post the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This period was marked by significant challenges and scrutiny from teams and drivers alike.
The announcement of Wittich’s departure, which Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc described as “coming out a bit of nowhere,” was made just before the Las Vegas Grand Prix. World champion Max Verstappen also noted the peculiarity of the timing, given that there were only three races left in the season. The FIA did not provide a specific rationale for this decision, leading to speculation and discussions within the racing community.
It is believed that FIA president Mohamed Ben Sulayem played a pivotal role in Wittich’s removal. Rui Marques, the race director for Formula 2, has been appointed to fill Wittich’s position for the remaining F1 races in 2024.
Wittich’s involvement in the GT World Challenge marked a notable instance, as he collaborated with the series promoter, the Stéphane Ratel Organisation, for the first time in a capacity typically held by Alain Adam. According to the spokesperson for the SRO, Wittich’s previous experience with the Jeddah circuit was a motivating factor in his selection, especially since he had become available after the recent Brazilian Grand Prix.
In the six-hour race at Jeddah, Maro Engel, Lucas Auer, and Daniel Morad triumphed in their Winward Mercedes-AMG GT3, concluding the GTWCE series for GT3 cars. This competition saw participation from top-tier drivers, including the elite from the World Endurance Championship’s Hypercar category, with the Spa 24 Hours recognized as the series’ marquee event.
This victory clinched the overall GT World Challenge Europe title for Engel and Auer, who finished ahead of Franck Perera, Jordan Pepper, and Marco Mapelli’s Grasser Racing Lamborghini by a margin of 7.971 seconds. Meanwhile, third place in the Ferrari 296 GT3 shared by Alessandro Pier Guidi, Alessio Rovera, and Davide Rigon was sufficient for Pier Guidi and Rovera to secure the Endurance Cup title, allowing them to somewhat recover from the letdown experienced at the Spa 24 Hours when a mechanical failure hindered their chances in the race’s closing laps.
Key Takeaways
Wittich’s unexpected removal has sparked dialogue surrounding the FIA’s management changes and the ongoing challenges faced within Formula 1’s organizational structure. As the action continues in the GT World Challenge, the performance and strategies of teams remain pivotal, emphasizing the level of competition within motorsport.
