Abbotsford-South Langley: A Hotbed for Election Attention in B.C.
The Abbotsford-South Langley riding has emerged as a crucial contender in the upcoming federal election, reflecting a shift in the political landscape of British Columbia’s Fraser Valley. This traditionally Conservative stronghold is witnessing unprecedented competition, primarily due to the independent candidacy of Mike de Jong, a veteran politician with deep local roots.
Historically, Abbotsford and the broader Fraser Valley have leaned heavily towards Conservative representation, making the region a key target for federal parties. Political expert Hamish Telford from the University of the Fraser Valley noted the area’s steadfast conservatism: “Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley generally have been a very conservative place.” However, the dynamics are changing with the new riding boundaries and de Jong’s unexpected entry into the race.
De Jong, who spent three decades as an MLA and held various cabinet positions, sought to represent the Conservatives in this new riding. His rejection by the party on grounds of “unqualification” has opened up the race. Instead, the party has put forward Sukhman Gill, a relatively young blueberry farmer. Gill’s unavailable schedule and reluctance to engage in public forums have raised eyebrows among voters and opponents alike.
De Jong has shifted his campaign focus toward vital local issues such as economic challenges stemming from international tariffs and ongoing flood mitigation efforts, particularly in light of the severe atmospheric river events experienced in 2021. During his campaign, he has criticized Gill’s absence from public debate, highlighting a disconnect between potential representatives and their constituents. He expressed concern, stating, “If a candidate is not prepared to stand up with the people… they are sure as heck not going to stand up for the people after.”
Despite his affiliation with the Conservative values, de Jong stressed that representation should originate from the local community and not be dictated by party elites in Ottawa. His stance resonates with many voters who feel disconnected from central party decisions.
The race has garnered substantial attention, as de Jong has received backing from Ed Fast, the outgoing MP for the area. Nonetheless, Telford cautioned against assuming that de Jong’s name recognition will guarantee victory, as independent candidates often struggle in federal elections. Interestingly, his candidacy could inadvertently jeopardize the Conservative vote, splitting it and creating an opening for the Liberals.
Kevin Gillies, the Liberal candidate, has been actively campaigning and seeks to position himself as the viable alternative in this rapidly evolving political environment. He aims to address local employment issues exacerbated by U.S. tariffs and advocates for the region’s flood management interests. Gillies emphasizes that a Liberal victory would ensure that the community has a “strong voice” in government.
In addition to the prominent candidates, the NDP’s Dharmasena Yakandawela, Green Party’s Melissa Snazell, and PPC’s Aeriol Alderking are also in the fray, adding further complexity to this contest. As election day approaches, Telford suggests that historical voting patterns might still favor the Conservatives, although he believes that the decision to exclude de Jong from their roster could have repercussions for their campaign.
With the political climate intensifying, voters in Abbotsford-South Langley are more engaged than in previous years, anticipating how this unique race will unfold in the face of evolving party dynamics and local sentiments.
