Nita Lowey, Pioneering Democrat and Former House Appropriations Chair, Passes Away
NEW YORK (AP) — Nita Lowey, a prominent figure in American politics and a trailblazer for women in government, has passed away at the age of 87. As the first female chair of the influential House Appropriations Committee, she leaves behind a legacy marked by her tireless advocacy for women, children, and families during her extensive 32-year career in Congress.
Her family announced her death on Saturday, stating that Lowey succumbed to metastatic breast cancer at her home in Harrison, New York, surrounded by loved ones. In an emotional tribute, they highlighted her formidable spirit, which she maintained throughout both her illness and her public service.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in recognition of Lowey’s significant contributions. “A public servant in the truest sense, she was guided by the Jewish core value of ‘Tikkun Olam,’ repairing the world,” her family’s statement reflected. They emphasized her unwavering commitment to working across party lines to achieve meaningful results for her constituents and the nation.
Lowey represented suburban areas north of New York City, including parts of Westchester County and the Hudson River Valley. First elected to Congress in 1988, she chose not to seek reelection in 2020, marking the end of her remarkable tenure.
Throughout her decades in public office, Lowey was instrumental in advocating for federal funding to combat AIDS and in promoting economic assistance to developing countries. She championed women’s healthcare and education, notably overcoming significant hurdles to ensure contraception coverage for federal employees in the late 1990s during a time when the House was Republican-controlled.
Reflecting on her decision to retire, Lowey once stated, “Frankly, to have a job that I love so very much made this a very difficult choice… But I just felt it was time.” Her leadership as chair of the House Appropriations Committee, a role she took on in 2018, was characterized by collaboration and a focus on essential federal funding priorities.
Among those honoring her legacy was Connecticut U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, who praised Lowey as a “fierce negotiator and loyal public servant” known for her courageous spirit and infectious humor. DeLauro noted Lowey’s relentless advocacy across a wide array of pressing issues, including healthcare, environmental protection, and educational support programs.
Current U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler, a Republican representing Lowey’s former district, acknowledged her “bipartisan spirit, commitment to our community, and dedication to the country.” Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins also shared heartfelt sentiments, recalling Lowey as a beacon of integrity and hope who served as both a mentor and a friend.
A private funeral and burial service will precede a memorial gathering planned for a later date. In their statement, Lowey’s family expressed deep sorrow over their loss, stating, “We will miss her more than words can say and take great comfort in knowing that she lived a full and purposeful life. Her memory will forever be a blessing to all who had the honor of knowing and loving her, and to the millions of people whose lives she touched.”
