Tragic Passing of Former U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber at Age 43
The legal community is mourning the untimely death of Jessica Aber, who served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Local police reported that Aber was discovered unresponsive at a residence in Alexandria early Saturday morning.
At just 43 years old, Aber’s death has left many in shock. Authorities received the call at approximately 9:18 a.m. and arrived to find her deceased at the scene. An active investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding her passing, with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner tasked with establishing the cause and manner of her death, as indicated in a police statement.
Aber’s tenure as U.S. Attorney began in October 2021 after a unanimous Senate confirmation, and she remained in the position until January 2025, shortly after the inauguration of former President Donald Trump. During her time in office, she was responsible for overseeing around 300 staff members, including prosecutors, while managing federal prosecutions across Virginia.
Her career in the U.S. Attorney’s office commenced in 2009, focusing on a wide variety of cases, including financial fraud, public corruption, violent crime, and child exploitation. Before her role as U.S. Attorney, Aber built a strong reputation as an assistant U.S. attorney, demonstrating her commitment to justice and public service.
Having obtained her law degree from William and Mary Law School in 2006, Aber was passionate about her profession and the impact of her work on the community. Current U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik Siebert, expressed his deep sorrow over her passing, highlighting her exceptional leadership and mentorship qualities as well as her irreplaceable human presence. “Her professionalism, grace, and legal acumen set the standard,” Siebert stated in an emotional tribute.
Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares also weighed in on the tragic news, praising Aber’s dedication to public service, including her contributions to Ceasefire Virginia, which played a significant role in saving countless lives. He extended condolences to her family during this difficult time.
