CHICAGO – The Chicagoland region experienced a tumultuous night as at least four tornadoes were reported following a series of severe storms, as announced by the National Weather Service (NWS).
This storm system unleashed powerful winds, leading to multiple Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings that lasted from late Friday night into the early hours of Saturday.
Tornadoes Confirmed in the Area
What we know
According to reports from NWS, the confirmed tornadoes affected several locations:
– EF-0 tornado in Bartlett and Hanover Park
– EF-0 tornado in Schererville and Merrillville
In addition to the tornadoes, damage assessments revealed extensive “multiple corridors” of straight-line wind damage across various areas, including eastern DeKalb County, western and northwestern Kane County, as well as Elgin, as reported by the NWS.
Wind gusts from the storm were reported to have reached up to 70 miles per hour in some locations, sufficient to inflict considerable damage on structures, including homes and roofs.
The severe weather commenced around 10 p.m. and swept through Chicago before advancing into Northwest Indiana. The last of the Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for LaPorte County, Indiana, was lifted at 3 a.m.
What’s next
While there is a possibility that other brief tornadoes occurred within the wind damage corridors, their existence remains unverified at this time.
