A New SDR Module for Framework 16 to Combat Rogue DronesThis innovative solution aims to detect, track, and address unauthorized drone activityEquipped with advanced processing capabilities and tailored cooling systems
Framework has gained a strong following due to their commitment to modularity in laptops. Unlike many manufacturers that have transitioned to using soldered components, which hinders upgradeability, Framework offers a customizable experience, allowing users to configure critical components according to their preferences.
Users can select everything from the processor and mainboard to RAM and additional features like the webcam, display, and keyboard. Recently, Framework introduced a RISC-V mainboard developed by DeepComputing, and expanded the potential storage capacity of their Laptop 16, now supporting up to 26TB of high-speed Gen4 SSD storage.
In a significant move towards user empowerment, Framework released 3D CAD designs for the Laptop 16 in 2024, enabling users to 3D print their own components. Lukas Henkel from Open Visions, which focuses on cutting-edge hardware solutions, is utilizing this flexibility to create a Software-Defined Radio (SDR) module intended for clients operating within the Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) domain.
Addressing Drone Threats
This emergent SDR module is designed to fit within the Framework 16 GPU module form factor. According to Henkel, this configuration will yield a “fully enclosed solution with substantial processing power and a very high-bandwidth connection between the radio and the host system.”
In another post, Henkel elaborated on the technical challenges he faces, particularly in modifying the cooling mechanisms for the SDR module. He noted that the original design was intended for a single heat source, necessitating customization of the heat pipe and spreader to accommodate both the FPGA and DSP chips. Fortunately, the design allows sufficient vertical space for these enhancements.
While Henkel hasn’t disclosed the specific functionalities of the SDR module, given its application in the C-UAS field, it is reasonable to assume that it will focus on identifying, monitoring, and potentially neutralizing unauthorized or threatening drone activity. Such technology has applications across military, law enforcement, and security sectors, marking a pioneering integration of advanced drone defense capabilities into a laptop framework.
I’m developing an SDR module for a customer in the C-UAS sector. The system will fit into the Framework 16 GPU module form factor resulting in a nice fully enclosed solution with lots of processing power and a very high bandwidth link between the radio and the host system.
