French Health Workers Continue Hunger Strike for Gaza
A collective of French health professionals, who initiated the movement Hungry for Justice for Palestine, is currently on their third week of a hunger strike. This protest aims to shine a light on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the alleged war crimes carried out by the Israeli military. After addressing the French Senate, they escalated their appeal to Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in Brussels.
Founded on March 31 in Marseille, the group comprises health professionals who recently returned from Gaza and describes itself as an “independent, apolitical, secular and cross-party initiative,” as stated on its website.
Currently, twenty members of this movement have entered the 25th day of their hunger strike, which serves as a denunciation of what they perceive as the inaction and silence of both France and the European Union regarding the alleged atrocities of the Israeli force in Gaza.
The activists are voicing their protests against the blockade of medical resources imposed on Gaza, as well as the attacks targeting Palestinian healthcare workers.
A delegation from the organisation shared their firsthand experiences from Gaza during a meeting held at the European Parliament on Wednesday.
Israel’s actions have turned Gaza into a ‘humanitarian hellscape,’ according to the UN.
The hunger strike is spearheaded by Dr. Pascal André, a French specialist in infectious diseases and emergency medicine, who brought to light the traumatic experiences endured by medical personnel in Gaza. He criticized the “cowardice” and “complicity” exhibited by European nations in the face of these crises.
For over 50 days, Israel has restricted humanitarian aid deliveries into the Gaza region.
