Frito-Lay has issued a recall for a specific batch of its 13 oz. Lay’s Classic Potato Chips due to concerns about an undeclared allergen. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), this oversight could pose a serious health risk for individuals with milk allergies, potentially leading to life-threatening reactions. The issue was flagged after a consumer reported the possibility that some bags contained undeclared milk, prompting the recall announcement.
The affected bags were primarily distributed to retail stores and online sellers in Oregon and Washington, and they were available for purchase starting November 3, 2024. The FDA’s notice highlights that those with known allergies or severe sensitivities to milk should avoid consuming these products to prevent severe allergic reactions. Fortunately, as of the recall, no allergic incidents have been documented, and the recall is limited to this particular product. Other varieties of Lay’s products remain unaffected.
The specific bags in question bear the UPC code 28400 31041, feature a “Guaranteed Fresh” date of February 11, 2025, and include one of the following manufacturing codes: 6462307xx or 6463307xx. The FDA’s guidance for consumers who may have purchased these chips includes recommendations to either discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
This recall reflects a broader concern regarding food labeling accuracy, as seen in a recent incident involving Costco. In October, nearly 80,000 pounds of the retailer’s store-brand butter were recalled due to a labeling error that omitted the presence of milk, a crucial ingredient.
For more information on food safety and handling recalls, the FDA provides guidelines to assist consumers in managing recalled products effectively.
