After 14 years of existing as a digital archive on the Dischord Records website, Fugazi will begin sharing their live recordings on their Bandcamp page. This new initiative will start on Friday (May 2) during Bandcamp Friday, featuring two performances from pivotal points in the band’s history: their inaugural show at D.C.’s Wilson Center on September 3, 1987, and their last performance on November 2, 2002, in London.

More recordings will be added monthly, and the band’s online archives will still be accessible for fans.

Founded in 1986, Fugazi emerged from the vibrant D.C. hardcore music scene, featuring notable members such as Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat and Guy Picciotto of Rites of Spring. The band produced six studio albums from 1990 to 2001, achieving moderate commercial success. Although their fourth album, Red Medicine, peaked at No. 126 on the Billboard 200 in 1995, the band’s commercial impact was less significant in their home country than in the U.K.

Fugazi’s live shows were a standout feature of their career, where they maintained a DIY approach that allowed them to deliver over 1,000 performances during their 16 years together, often charging as little as $5 to ensure affordability for all attendees.

In 2004, the band began releasing its live recordings as physical CDs, later transitioning to an online format in 2011. At that point, over 800 shows became available for purchase, offering fans a glimpse into the live experience, complete with casual imperfections like false starts and stage banter.

“We liked this idea of, ‘Let’s just let it be everything,'” Picciotto explained in a 2011 interview with The New York Times. “There doesn’t have to be the idea that this is the great, golden document. It’s all there, and it’s not cleaned up. You get what you get.”

Since 2003, Fugazi has been on an indefinite hiatus, although its members maintain friendship and occasionally collaborate through other projects. As of now, there is no official announcement regarding a reunion from the influential band.
