FBI’s Most Wanted Fugitive Captured in Mexico After Over a Decade
A man who was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list for allegedly murdering his wife on their wedding night has been apprehended in Mexico, marking a significant breakthrough in a case that has lingered for more than 12 years. Arnoldo Jimenez was captured on Thursday in Monterrey, Mexico, according to the FBI’s Chicago division.
Jimenez’s wife, Estrella Carrera, was tragically found dead in the bathtub of their Burbank, Illinois apartment on May 13, 2012, just two days after their marriage. The shocking nature of her death raised urgent concerns and led to a nationwide manhunt when Jimenez became a suspect.
Charges and Investigation
Following Carrera’s death, Jimenez was charged with first-degree murder, and a state warrant for his arrest was issued on May 15, 2012. Just two days later, a federal warrant was added after Jimenez was accused of fleeing to evade prosecution.
The joint efforts of several law enforcement agencies were crucial in locating Jimenez. The investigation involved collaboration between the FBI Chicago, FBI San Antonio, and FBI’s Legal Attaché Office in Mexico City, along with significant contributions from the FiscalÃa General de la República. Jimenez’s arrest was made possible through coordination with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
Statements from Law Officials
Douglas S. DePodesta, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office, expressed gratitude for the extensive teamwork that led to the capture. “The FBI is extremely appreciative of the Burbank Police Department, our law enforcement partners in Mexico, and the public for their tremendous investigative efforts and collaboration in the capture of Ten Most Wanted Fugitive Arnoldo Jimenez,” he stated. He emphasized the FBI’s commitment to using all available resources to pursue justice, regardless of the time elapsed or the fugitive’s location.
Burbank Police Deputy Chief William Casey also commended the collaborative efforts. He remarked that the apprehension was a testament to the dedication of both the FBI and the local police in their mission to achieve justice for Estrella Carrera and her family.
Jimenez remains in custody in Mexico as extradition proceedings are initiated. At the time of his capture, he was ranked as the fourth-most wanted fugitive in the United States.
