Note: This story contains spoilers from “Suits LA” Episode 9.
The latest episode of “Suits LA,” titled “Bat Signal,” concluded Ted Black’s longstanding conflict with mobster Pellegrini while also marking the return of beloved character Harvey Specter. This episode sees the narrative unfold as Harvey (played by Gabriel Macht) enlists the help of his old friend Ted (Stephen Amell) in New York City to once again take down Pellegrini (Anthony Azizi), who has been granted parole after their previous encounter years ago. The storyline infers the repercussions of Harvey’s testimony during Pellegrini’s original trial, which has led to the mobster’s current predicament.
Ted and Harvey, supported by Kevin (Troy Winbush), engage in an intricate investigation that leads to getting one of Pellegrini’s subordinates to betray him. This individual is tied deeply to Ted’s past, being linked to the tragic death of Ted’s brother, Eddie (Carson A. Egan). The episode is packed with sharp dialogue, legal drama, and intense moments including a noteworthy explosion, culminating in a final confrontation with Pellegrini, ultimately serving justice for Eddie.
Amidst the unfolding drama, Harvey reveals snippets of his life since departing from the original series. A mysterious message from a contact labeled “My Boy” prompts curiosity, and while he mentions having a son, he opts not to share the boy’s name. Furthermore, there is no substantial update regarding Harvey’s wife, Donna (Sarah Rafferty), although he vaguely references his involvement in a “task force.”
Reflecting on this return to the character, Macht shared his thoughts with TheWrap, expressing appreciation for the chance to revive Harvey Specter’s role and the joy of connecting with fans once again. He emphasized the importance of personal and professional motivations, particularly after witnessing the resurgence of interest in “Suits” on platforms like Netflix.
TheWrap: It’s great to see you reprise the role of Harvey. How did it feel to get back to this role after some time away?
Macht: Reprising the role has been a rewarding experience. It’s been a creative and nostalgic journey. After learning about the storyline from creator Aaron Korsh, I reflected on the enthusiastic fanbase that emerged following the show’s resurgence on Netflix. I felt an obligation to support the cast and crew, particularly to help draw more attention to the project.
Working with my family schedule, the production team was accommodating, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
How was it to work with Stephen during this chapter of the new show?
Stephen has been fantastic to collaborate with. He approaches the role with a level of professionalism and enthusiasm that has contributed significantly to our on-screen chemistry. His character’s backstory adds a layer of complexity that contrasts sharply with Harvey’s persona, and I appreciated the dynamic interplay of our characters.
In navigating his character’s challenges, Ted grapples with his past while attempting to maintain his professional responsibilities. Meanwhile, Harvey is positioned to offer guidance and a sense of stability.
We saw you mostly in flashbacks to 2010 — when Ted and Harvey were playing baseball together and occasionally collaborating at work — meaning this is Harvey before the original “Suits” had begun. How was it to explore that era of your character?
I have a personal affinity for baseball, which made shooting at Rancho Park—a location significant from my high school days—very nostalgic. It created surreal moments, such as having my dad present to witness a particular scene during filming.
As time has passed, the evolution of Harvey’s character is evident. In the original series, he presents as a tough, often unyielding figure, and stepping into that earlier version of him challenged me emotionally. I found that some of his traits were difficult to portray due to their resonance with negative aspects of my personality. Yet it was gratifying to return to the more seasoned, grounded version of Harvey.
Episodes 8 and 9 do show us Harvey in the present day. How was it to reunite with him and see where he’s at in his life now?
It was heartwarming to witness Harvey’s development and the sense of contentment he exhibits in his life. Seeing him happily involved with his partner and fulfilling the role of a father enriched the narrative for me.
Would you return for more or “Suits LA” in the future?
Future involvement would depend on how it fits into my schedule. However, I would not rule it out. The show has a compelling direction, and plenty more stories awaiting exploration for both old and new fans.
“Suits LA” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT and streams the next day on Peacock.
