“Gachiakuta,” a forthcoming shonen anime produced by Bones Film, is set to premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll this July.

In a gripping trailer for the series, the main character Rudo passionately declares, “I’ll kill every one of you human beings! Those who looked down on me… I’ll beat the crap out of them. I’m not dying until then!” This sentiment encapsulates the intense tone of the show.

Asa Suehira, Crunchyroll’s chief content officer, commented on the series’ unique premise, stating, “’Gachiakuta’ stands out as one of the most unique shonen anime in recent years, blending intense action with a striking artistic style. Crunchyroll is proud to partner with Kodansha and Bones Film to bring this exciting new story to fans worldwide, exclusively to the Crunchyroll streaming service.”

The series, which is adapted from the manga of the same name, follows a young outcast on a quest for revenge after being wrongfully accused of murder. Set in a dystopian environment, “Gachiakuta” employs a graffiti-inspired animation style that distinguishes it from other entries in the genre.

According to Crunchyroll’s official description, Rudo’s story begins in a floating town where the impoverished struggle beneath the privilege of the wealthy, who disdainfully discard their waste into an abyss. His life takes a dark turn when he is falsely convicted of murder, resulting in a brutal punishment—exile into the depths, alongside discarded refuse. The dangerous surface world, populated by grotesque monsters born from humanity’s waste, forces Rudo to tap into a newfound power and join a group known as the Cleaners, whose mission is to combat these formidable trash beasts.

The series comes from the creative powerhouse at Bones Film, with Hiroshi Seko, known for his work on “Attack on Titan” and “Jujutsu Kaisen,” credited as the series writer.

Seko expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “When I’m writing the scripts for ‘Gachiakuta,’ it makes me want to blast my music. It makes me want to go out and have some fun… An anime that makes you feel that way is the best. I mean that from the bottom of my heart.”

Satoshi Ishino, recognized for his work on “Date A Live” and “Tokyo Mew Mew New,” takes on the roles of character designer and chief animation director. Music for the anime will be composed by the distinguished Taku Iwasaki, celebrated for his contributions to “Bungo Stray Dogs” and “Shin Kamen Rider.”

“Gachiakuta” is not only a tale of vengeance but also a captivating action manga that combines the talents of writer and illustrator Kei Urana and graffiti artist Hideyoshi Andou. Since its serialization began in February 2022 in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine, the series has garnered significant acclaim, winning the Global Special Prize in the Comics category at the Next Manga Awards 2022. Both creators are eager for audiences to engage with the animated adaptation.

Urana shared his hopes for the anime’s impact, stating, “I hope this anime stays in your soul! I’m looking forward to watching the ‘Gachiakuta’ anime together with you all!” Meanwhile, Andou added, “I hope the passion that ‘Gachiakuta’ inspires reaches all of you! As you watch the animated ‘Gachiakuta,’ I hope everyone feels the same spark of motivation!”
