Garmin Unveils a Multifunctional Bike Light with 4K Safety CameraThe device combines a robust 600-lumen light and a safety cameraThe Varia Vue retails for $549 / £459 (approximately AU$965)

Garmin has introduced a groundbreaking product for cyclists, enhancing road safety with a device that merges a powerful 600-lumen front light and a 4K safety camera, effectively transforming it into a bicycle dash camera.

Named the Varia Vue, this innovative gadget serves as an upgraded counterpart to Garmin’s rear tail light and radar system, known as the Varia RCT715. Unlike its predecessor, the Varia Vue boasts a significantly brighter light output of 600 lumens and comes with a state-of-the-art 4K front-facing camera, surpassing the typical 1080p resolution. This camera is equipped to automatically record incidents, functioning similarly to top-tier dash cameras.

The timing of this release seems long overdue. Whether navigating bustling urban environments or quieter rural pathways, many cyclists require a reliable front light coupled with a recording device. The integration of both functions into a cohesive design should appeal to a range of cycling enthusiasts, albeit at a steep price point.

Garmin asserts that the integrated camera features electronic image stabilization, enabling clear visibility of license plates even on bumpy roads, although this may result in a slight cropping of the image. It remains to be seen how this stabilization will compare to premium action cameras like the GoPro Hero 13 Black.

While Garmin has previously ventured into the action camera domain with its Virb series, expectations for the Varia Vue to rival brands like GoPro and DJI in terms of image quality may be tempered. However, ensuring adequate quality is vital for a cycling dash cam, where minute details can be crucial. Additionally, the Varia Vue is equipped with a hidden microphone to capture audio, enhancing the context of recorded incidents.

One concern regarding this dual-function device may be its battery life. According to Garmin’s specifications, the Varia Vue is designed to last “up to seven hours” with the day flash mode activated and the camera recording simultaneously. However, this duration is reduced to just over an hour when using full brightness. Alternatively, the device can last “up to nine hours” without utilizing the headlight, particularly if recording in 1080p. For longer rides, it’s worth noting that the camera can operate while charging.

Video recordings are saved on a microSD card (not included), and users have the option to automatically back up footage to the cloud via Wi-Fi using Garmin Vault.

However, utilizing the cloud storage feature does come with an annual subscription fee of $99 / £99, which some users may find prohibitive.

Nevertheless, the innovative concept of integrating a lighting system with a cycling camera is a refreshing development. As an urban cyclist, I appreciate the practicality of enhancing safety with such a compact unit. The Varia Vue is now available for purchase at $549 / £459 (approximately AU$965).

Despite advancements, the cycling technology landscape often feels somewhat outdated. Many cyclists, including myself, still rely on older models of lights and cameras for longer rides.

The Varia Vue enters a competitive market, positioning itself against established products like the Cycliq Fly12 Sport, which combines a 4K camera with a 400-lumen light priced around $319 / £299 / AU$449. Wahoo has also released the Trackr Radar, enhancing visibility with radar technology similar to that found in Garmin’s rear light system.

While none of these options are inexpensive, there are valid points to consider regarding the practicality of investing in a combined device compared to separate units, especially for cyclists who may not need camera functionality on every excursion. Furthermore, the cost of the Varia Vue’s cloud storage could deter users who do not plan to utilize it frequently.

Ultimately, the launch of the Varia Vue marks a welcome evolution in bike safety technology. The growing competition in this sector may encourage the emergence of more budget-friendly alternatives in the near future, dependent on market dynamics.
