California Senate Race: Schiff Calls on Biden to Withdraw, Garvey Responds
California Senate candidate Steve Garvey has sharply criticized Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., for urging President Biden to exit the 2024 race, labeling the move as “selfish desperation.” This came after Schiff’s campaign was outraised by Garvey’s by over $1 million.
“Adam Schiff’s recent act of selfish desperation to abandon his presidential nominee has caused a clear reaction from his supporters on social media,” said Garvey, the Republican candidate. “It’s now clear to his supporters what has been clear to millions of Americans for years, that Adam Schiff only cares about Adam Schiff, and Californians deserve a senator that puts them above politics.”
Earlier this week, Schiff released a statement to Fox News Digital calling for President Biden to step aside in the 2024 election. “A second Trump presidency will undermine the very foundation of our democracy, and I have serious concerns about whether the President can defeat Donald Trump in November,” Schiff noted.
Garvey responded in a social media post stating it was “not surprising” that Schiff made such a call following the fundraising report that showed Garvey’s campaign surpassing Schiff’s by $1.2 million.
Fundraising Disparities and Political Maneuvering
Garvey’s campaign raised $5.4 million between April 1 and June 30, compared to Schiff’s $4.1 million. This marks the first time in 14 years a Republican statewide candidate in California raised more than a Democratic candidate.
“It’s understandable that they felt they had to take dramatic action when this news came out,” Garvey commented. “When Adam Schiff announced that he believes President Biden shouldn’t seek re-election, it dominated the news cycle for the day, helping in part to bury our fundraising success story.”
Garvey also questioned why Schiff would urge Biden to drop out of the race but not call for his resignation. “If Schiff doesn’t believe Biden can be an effective candidate, why does he believe that he can continue to be an effective president?” Garvey asked. “It’s clear from Schiff’s own words that he is very concerned about his and other down-ticket chances this November.”
Schiff’s Perspective on Biden’s Presidency
Despite his concerns, Schiff praised Biden’s tenure, describing him as “one of the most consequential presidents in our nation’s history.” He acknowledged Biden’s lifetime of service and the significant impacts he has had. Yet, he stated, “Our nation is at a crossroads.”
Schiff mentioned that while the decision to withdraw from the race remains with Biden, “I believe it is time for him to pass the torch.” He suggested that Biden could “secure his legacy of leadership by allowing us to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election” if he steps aside.
“But make no mistake, whoever our party ends up nominating, or if the nomination remains with the president, I will do everything I can to help them succeed,” Schiff clarified. “There is only one singular goal: defeating Donald Trump. The stakes are just too high.”
Special Counsel Robert Hur’s Report
Back in March, Schiff had an intense exchange with special counsel Robert Hur during a House hearing. Schiff defended Biden against Hur’s February report, which described the president as a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” Hur concluded no criminal charges would be brought against Biden after examining allegations of improper retention of classified documents.
Schiff criticized Hur’s report, claiming it “disparage[d] the president” and predicted it would generate significant political ramifications. Hur responded that “politics played no part whatsoever” in his investigation.
Garvey, a former baseball player, will face Schiff in the November 5 election in California. The race is considered “Solid Democratic” by the Cook Political Report, giving Schiff an advantage.
Schiff’s call for Biden’s withdrawal makes him the 20th congressional Democrat to do so, with a total of 35 House and Senate Democrats favoring Biden’s exit from the 2024 race thus far.
