Blue Jays Trade Veteran Catcher Danny Jansen to Red Sox
TORONTO – In a significant move within the Major League Baseball landscape, the Toronto Blue Jays have traded catcher Danny Jansen to the Boston Red Sox. This transaction came as starting pitcher Kevin Gausman celebrated a standout performance, leading the Blue Jays to a 7-3 victory against the Texas Rangers at Rogers Centre on Saturday.
Jansen, who has been a mainstay with the Blue Jays for seven years, was obtained by the Red Sox as the team looks to bolster its roster. “It’s a lot of mixed emotions, but I’m excited,” Jansen remarked, discovering the news of his trade on a clubhouse television after the game. His current contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
In exchange for Jansen, the Blue Jays have acquired three promising prospects: 20-year-old infielder Cutter Coffey from High-A Greenville, 22-year-old infielder Eddinson Paulino from Double-A Portland, and 19-year-old pitcher Gilberto Batista from the Florida Complex League.
Gausman praised Jansen’s impact, stating, “(Jansen’s) been a staple in this lineup, in this stadium, on this field. We’re going to miss him for sure. I understand the business, but he’s a hell of a person. He’s a hell of a baseball player.”
Although Jansen did not participate in Saturday’s game, Gausman delivered a remarkable performance, pitching a complete game on 118 pitches, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight batters. This win marked Gausman’s third career complete game. “I thought that he just executed at an extremely high level, and when his split is carrying the zone you see the Cy Young Award candidate coming out,” commented Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
The Blue Jays established early momentum in the first inning, highlighted by Daulton Varsho’s three-run homer, leading to a successful offensive effort that saw them send ten batters to the plate. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. contributed significantly with three hits and three runs scored during the game.
The Rangers initially took the lead when ex-Blue Jay Marcus Semien tripled and scored on a wild pitch. They narrowed the gap with a two-run third inning, but the Blue Jays responded robustly, adding runs in the fifth, sixth, and ninth innings to secure the victory.
Injury Updates and Trades
In related news, Schneider confirmed that Blue Jays prospect Ricky Tiedemann is set to undergo Tommy John surgery soon, indicating that he will likely miss most of the 2025 season due to an injury sustained while pitching for Triple-A Buffalo. Additionally, reliever Nate Pearson has been traded to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for two double-A teammates, outfielder Yohendrick Pinango and shortstop Josh Rivera.
The trade deadline looms, with the Blue Jays looking to finalize their roster ahead of what they hope will be a competitive end to the season.
What’s Next for the Blue Jays
The Blue Jays aim to build on their recent success as Jose Berrios (8-8) is scheduled to take the mound in the final game of the three-game series against Texas, who will counter with Jon Gray (5-4).
