Cutter Gauthier, in a thrilling finish, partnered with Frank Vatrano to stage a remarkable comeback for the Anaheim Ducks, ultimately claiming a dramatic 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames. Gauthier secured the victory with his goal just over a minute into overtime, capping off an eventful match.
The Flames had initially gained the upper hand when Yegor Sharangovich and Matt Coronato found the net within a brief span of 1:42, propelling Calgary to a 3-1 lead. However, with 3:57 left on the clock, Vatrano ignited the Ducks’ resurgence. Gauthier equalized shortly thereafter, just eight seconds later.
In the overtime session, Gauthier received a pivotal pass from Leo Carlsson and expertly fired a wrist shot from the high slot, beating Calgary’s goalie Dustin Wolf and placing the puck in the top right corner of the net.
In terms of defense, Ducks’ goalie Ville Husso was a standout performer, making 36 crucial saves throughout the match. The Flames initially took the lead when Mikael Backlund scored in the second period, but Trevor Zegras quickly leveled the score with 8:11 remaining in regulation. Sharangovich reclaimed the lead for Calgary with 6:14 left, while Coronato extended the advantage to two goals with just 4:42 remaining.
Despite Calgary’s 56.1% success rate in faceoffs and a total of 19 saves from Wolf, the team couldn’t hold onto their advantage. Currently, the Flames find themselves five points behind St. Louis in the race for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
Looking ahead, the Flames are set to face Minnesota on Friday night, while the Ducks will visit Los Angeles on Thursday.
