Gaza Death Toll Reaches 50,000, Health Ministry Reports; Israel Launches New Strikes and Evacuations

Recent reports from Palestinian officials indicate that the ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in over 50,000 fatalities, following Israel’s resumption of military action after a ceasefire came to an end last week. This wave of attacks reportedly led to hundreds of additional deaths.

Israel has issued stern warnings of “total destruction and devastation” to the region if Hamas does not surrender the remaining hostages. The Israeli military has intensified its operations, targeting locations it claims are associated with militant activities, in addition to initiating ground operations in northern Gaza.

On Sunday morning, Israeli airstrikes in the southern Gaza Strip resulted in the deaths of at least 26 Palestinians, which included a Hamas political figure as well as several women and children.

Witnesses reported that Israeli tanks advanced into southern Rafah, prompting military orders for residents to evacuate the area.

Displaced Palestinian families were seen traversing dirt roads, carrying their belongings—a heart-wrenching sight that has become increasingly common as the conflict has forced a significant portion of Gaza’s populace to flee.

“It’s displacement under fire,” shared Mustafa Gaber, a local journalist who escaped from Tel al-Sultan with his family. In a video call, he described the chaotic scene as hundreds sought refuge amidst the sounds of artillery and drone fire. “We have wounded among us. The situation is incredibly dire,” he recounted.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) characterized their operations in Tel al-Sultan as strikes against “terror infrastructure,” aiming to remove threats in the region and bolster security in southern Gaza. They affirmed their commitment to continue military actions against what they label terrorist organizations to safeguard Israeli civilians.

According to Hamas, a strike in Muwasi claimed the life of Salah Bardawil, a member of its political bureau and the Palestinian parliament, along with his wife.

Hospitals in southern Gaza reported receiving an influx of bodies from overnight strikes, with 24 new casualties including women and children. Subsequently, Gaza’s health ministry announced that an Israeli airstrike hit a hospital in Khan Yunis, resulting in at least one fatality and causing extensive damage to the surgical facility, leaving multiple patients injured.

Israeli military officials confirmed the strike, asserting that it targeted a Hamas militant within the hospital. They attribute civilian casualties to Hamas’s strategy of operating in densely populated districts.

An American physician working within the hospital, Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, recounted via telephone that the front of the building was ablaze following an explosion, expressing concern for the safety of patients and staff amid fears of further strikes.

Sources have indicated that Ismail Barhoum, a Hamas spokesperson, was the specific target of the hospital strike. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that overall, 50,021 Palestinians have lost their lives since the onset of the conflict, with injuries exceeding 113,000. The latest tally includes 673 fatalities recorded since a renewed wave of bombardment began last Tuesday, along with 233 recently identified casualties.

The ministry’s figures do not differentiate between civilian and combatant casualties; however, it has asserted that women and children comprise over half of the deceased individuals. Israel claims to have eliminated around 20,000 militants, although it has not provided verification of these numbers.

In a significant policy move, Israel’s Cabinet recently approved the creation of a new directorate aimed at facilitating the “voluntary departure” of Palestinians, aligning with proposals to repopulate Gaza for others. Rights organizations have condemned this initiative, suggesting it could constitute a form of forced expulsion in violation of international law.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the new agency would operate under both Israeli and international regulations, coordinating secure passage by land, sea, and air for those who choose to relocate.

The ceasefire established in January had temporarily halted a prolonged cycle of violence that began with Hamas’s attacks on Israel in October 2023, which left around 1,200 individuals dead. During the initial fighting, Hamas militants took 251 hostages, a majority of whom have since been released either through ceasefire negotiations or rescue operations, resulting in eight successful rescues of living captives and the recovery of numerous bodies.

Negotiations to resume ceasefire discussions were expected to commence in early February, aimed at securing the release of the remaining 59 hostages—of whom 35 are presumed deceased—in exchange for additional Palestinian detainees, a sustained ceasefire, and an Israeli military withdrawal.

However, these talks did not materialize, as Israel rescinded the ceasefire agreement after Hamas declined proposals backed by Israel and the U.S. for more hostages’ release before engaging in discussions for a lasting truce.
