What you need to know
Gemini Flash 2.0 has broadened its accessibility, introducing more users to its notable image generation capabilities. This development has sparked discussions among users on platforms like Reddit, where some have discovered a method to eliminate watermarks from images sourced from stock photo websites such as Getty Images and Shutterstock. While Gemini successfully removes the original watermark, it adds a subtle watermark of its own in the bottom left corner of the image.
Last week, Google unveiled a variety of new features available through Gemini Flash 2.0, one of which is the opportunity to experiment with image generation. Initially showcased in December, this feature allows developers to explore an “experimental version of Gemini 2.0 Flash” through AI Studio.
This innovative model empowers users to provide prompts that result in illustrated images that can narrate a story or offer detailed visuals for recipes, complete with real-life illustrations of each step. Additionally, it can create text-rendered images that may appeal to those aiming to enhance their social media content.
Interestingly, some unexpected capabilities have emerged, notably the ability to remove watermarks from images using this experimental feature, as highlighted in a Reddit post initially reported by Tech Crunch.
Gemini is pretty good in removing watermarks from r/singularity
In a sequence of images shared in the aforementioned Reddit post, a user demonstrated the process of uploading a heavily watermarked image to Gemini’s latest model. The result was a cleaner image with the watermarks removed, although Gemini included its logo on the generated image to signify that modifications had taken place.
This capability extends to images obtained from platforms like Shutterstock, Istock, and Getty Images, which typically charge a subscription fee to access watermark-free versions. Reports indicate that the Gemini 2.0 Flash model faces challenges with specific types of watermarks, particularly those that are semi-transparent or dominate significant portions of the images.
It’s crucial to note that removing watermarks without permission is against the law and could result in legal repercussions for the individuals or organizations involved. Following incidents where users showcased the removal of watermarks from Getty Images on social media, one user reported difficulties in generating images without watermarks on AI Studio as of March 17, indicating a potential response from Google to the rising trend of unauthorized watermark removal.
Android Central has reached out to Google for further clarification on this situation, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
