Google Sheets is set to experience significant enhancements with the introduction of upgraded capabilities for its artificial intelligence (AI) tool, Gemini. This update, which was announced on Wednesday, is being deployed to users subscribed to Google Workspace and those enrolled in the Google One AI Premium plan. A notable aspect of this upgrade is Gemini’s newfound ability to translate complex user prompts into Python code, facilitating multi-step data analysis—an improvement over its previous functionality, which was limited to single-layer formula creation.

Gemini in Google Sheets Expands Its Functionality

In a recent blog post, Google, headquartered in Mountain View, shared updates regarding Gemini’s expanded capabilities in Google Sheets. These new features will be accessible to various tiers of Google Workspace subscribers, including Business Standard, Plus, and Enterprise users, as well as those with Gemini Education and Education Premium add-ons. Additionally, Google One AI Premium subscribers will benefit from these advancements.

Previously, the Gemini side panel in Google Sheets had the capacity to summarise spreadsheet content and generate tables. However, this process revolved around transforming user prompts into basic formulas, which could only execute a single-layer data analysis due to the inherent limitations of formulas.

With the latest enhancements, Gemini is now equipped to perform more sophisticated data analyses and visualisations. Users can now prompt the AI assistant to convert their requests into Python code, allowing for comprehensive, multi-layered analysis of data sets.

Google outlined that the upgraded Gemini can respond intelligently to inquiries about data, offering insights that delve deeper into spreadsheet contents. Users are encouraged to ask questions regarding trends, patterns, and correlations among various data points. Moreover, Gemini is now capable of creating charts that facilitate better visual understanding of the data, which can be embedded as static images within the spreadsheet.

For instance, a user seeking to evaluate the effectiveness of a marketing campaign might prompt Gemini with a request such as, “Provide insights on the top three performing channels by conversion rate.” In response, the AI assistant will not only furnish a detailed overview but will also include supporting charts for enhanced context.

The rollout of these capabilities has commenced, but it may take approximately 15 days for the update to be fully deployed and accessible to all eligible users.
