George Clooney Commends Wes Moore as a Democratic Leader

In a recent conversation with CNN’s Jake Tapper, actor George Clooney expressed his strong support for Wes Moore as a leading contender for the Democratic Party’s future. Clooney’s comments come in light of the party’s challenges following the 2024 election, where he highlighted Moore’s qualities that set him apart from other potential leaders.

Clooney specifically praised the Maryland governor’s handling of crises, stating, “He is the guy that has handled this tragedy in Baltimore beautifully.” He went on to emphasize Moore’s extensive background, mentioning his two tours of duty in Afghanistan and his impressive professional trajectory that includes running a hedge fund and the Robin Hood Foundation. “He’s a proper leader,” Clooney affirmed, adding, “I like him a lot. I think he could be someone we could all join in behind.”

The discussion shifted when Tapper brought up an op-ed Clooney wrote for the New York Times last July, calling for President Joe Biden to reconsider his candidacy after a lackluster debate performance against Donald Trump. This piece garnered attention, and not long after, Biden did withdraw from the race. Tapper remarked that many viewed Clooney’s decision to speak out as an act of courage.

Clooney, however, reframed this notion, suggesting that it was more a matter of civic responsibility than bravery. “I’m a Democrat in Kentucky, so I get it. When I saw people on my side of the street not telling the truth, I thought that was time to act,” he explained.

Tapper then inquired whether Clooney faced backlash for his controversial statements. Replying candidly, Clooney acknowledged, “Some people, sure. That’s OK.” He emphasized the importance of freedom of speech, noting, “You can’t demand freedom of speech and then say, ‘But don’t say bad things about me.’ That’s the deal. You have to take your stand if you believe in it, stand for it, and then deal with the consequences. That’s the rules.”

Clooney’s reflections highlight the ongoing discourse within the Democratic Party as it navigates its future leadership and strategies following electoral setbacks. His endorsement of Moore signals a potential shift towards leaders who embody resilience and complex understandings of public service.
