George Pickens Fined Again for Unsportsmanlike Conduct
George Pickens, the wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has once again found himself in financial trouble due to his conduct on the field. This season, he has been fined multiple times, with his latest penalty reportedly amounting to $20,462 for two instances of unsportsmanlike behavior. One of the infractions included him making a finger gun gesture after a considerable reception during a recent game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
In addition to this latest fine, Pickens faced three penalties last season, resulting from a combination of infractions including a blindside block, multiple taunts, a personal message displayed on the field, and two instances of excessive facemasking.
The ongoing issues with Pickens’ behavior have attracted criticism, particularly from Head Coach Mike Tomlin, who recently commented on the need for Pickens to mature quickly in light of the emotional intensity that accompanies divisional games. Tomlin stated, “He’s got a target on his back because he’s George; he understands that. But he’s got to grow up. He’s got to grow up in a hurry.”
This season has seen increased scrutiny of Pickens’ actions. Notably, he was involved in a physical altercation with Cleveland Browns defensive back Greg Newsome II during a recent Thursday night game, and earlier in the season, he faced accusations of not fully engaging in plays.
Adding to the controversy was Pickens’ unusual behavior during a post-Thanksgiving press conference, where he mirrored a famous moment from former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch, creating a stir among media and fans alike.
Despite these challenges, Pickens has been performing well on the field, with 55 receptions for 850 yards and three touchdowns to his name this season.
This year marks a shift in how the NFL is addressing player celebrations, particularly with gestures resembling firearms. As a result, the league has issued a total of 21 fines related to extreme gestures this season alone.
