ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus Calls for Stronger German Leadership in Europe
In a recent interview with Der Spiegel, Björn Ulvaeus, the renowned ABBA member, expressed the importance of Germany taking on a pivotal role in Europe. He emphasized that the nation needs to be the “driving force” in shaping the continent’s future.
Ulvaeus pointed to Friedrich Merz, a conservative politician poised for a vote as the next chancellor when the Bundestag reconvenes on May 6, following the recent elections, describing him as “Europe’s hope” during this critical time.
Reflecting on his childhood experiences during the Cold War, Ulvaeus shared his apprehensions regarding the Soviet Union, particularly in light of the current geopolitical climate. He noted that Russia’s proximity over the Baltic Sea remains a source of unease.
He remarked, “The feeling of being threatened was very real. And that’s the way it is now again,” drawing parallels between historical tensions and today’s challenges.
As he approaches his 80th birthday, Ulvaeus reflected on the dilemmas he faced as a young man in a neutral Sweden. He pondered questions about courage and resistance during potential occupation, expressing relief that he was never forced to confront such choices. “I could never have imagined living under the communist yoke,” he stated, underscoring the weight of his reflections on freedom and security.
