Jake Gyllenhaal Tackles the Challenge of Transforming for the New ‘Road House’
Jake Gyllenhaal is currently gearing up for the physically demanding role in the sequel to Road House, feeling the weight of the responsibility to get back into fighting shape. The accomplished actor, now 44, portrayed an ex-UFC fighter named Dalton in this anticipated film set to release in March 2024. Although specific plot details remain under wraps, Gyllenhaal has publicly expressed his apprehension about the intense training required to achieve the desired physique for the role.
During a recent appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, he described the process of bulking up as “terrifying.” Colbert, known for his humor, quipped that Gyllenhaal would have to “eat every chicken that’s left in America,” referencing the ongoing bird flu crisis. The playful banter included suggestions for alternative protein sources, such as shrimp, which Gyllenhaal quickly dismissed as “the most unappetizing.”
Reflecting on his physical transformation for the first film, Gyllenhaal shared insights with PEOPLE about the collaborative effort that it took to reach his fitness goals. He remarked, “It took a village” to get him ready for the rigorous demands of the role. Recognizing the importance of proper nutrition and injury prevention, he appreciated the team that assisted him along the way, mentioning a comparable transformation he undertook for the 2015 film Southpaw.
The original Road House, which debuted in 1989, starred the late Patrick Swayze, with whom Gyllenhaal shared a professional bond from their past collaboration on Donnie Darko in 2001. In a thoughtful tribute reflecting on Swayze’s influence, Gyllenhaal posted on Instagram in March 2024. He expressed his enduring respect and admiration for Swayze, recalling, “He was such a talent,” and emphasizing how the late actor’s kindness had impacted him early in his career. Gyllenhaal hoped that the new iteration of Road House would resonate with Swayze’s spirit, stating, “We’ve made a different RH this time around, but hoping it’s one he would’ve had fun watching!”
Swayze passed away in September 2009 at the age of 57 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire actors and fans alike.
