The campaign, titled the Help Karmelo Official Fund, was established to assist Anthony and his family during this challenging time. The Anthony family expressed gratitude for the support they have received, stating, “The narrative being spread is false, unjust, and harmful. The violence erupted during the University Interscholastic League’s District 11-5A championship meet held at Kuykendall Stadium. As both students were engaged in competition, a physical altercation ensued, resulting in the tragic incident.
Karmelo Anthony, 17, has been charged with first-degree murder, asserting that he was acting in self-defense during the confrontation. He is currently detained at the Collins County Jail under a bond of $1 million, which his legal representative is seeking to reduce.
Anthony’s attorney, Deric Walpole, commented on the situation, emphasizing the importance of understanding the facts. “I know that my client said it was self-defense. I don’t have any reason to disbelieve that, but I need to develop facts, talk to people and figure out what’s going on before I make any statements about what I think happened,” Walpole stated. “I don’t have any reason to think it wasn’t self-defense at this time.”
