Fundraiser for Teen Accused in Fatal Stabbing Approaches $150,000

An online fundraiser for Karmelo Anthony, the Texas high school student facing charges in the stabbing death of fellow student-athlete Austin Metcalf, is nearing a total of $150,000 in donations. The incident occurred during a track meet in Frisco, Texas, where the two were competing.

The campaign, titled the Help Karmelo Official Fund, was established to assist Anthony and his family during this challenging time. The Anthony family expressed gratitude for the support they have received, stating, “The narrative being spread is false, unjust, and harmful. As a family of faith, we are deeply grateful for all of your support during this trying period. Your prayers and assistance mean more to us now more than ever.”

As of now, the fundraiser has amassed $144,873, with a target goal set at $200,000. The violence erupted during the University Interscholastic League’s District 11-5A championship meet held at Kuykendall Stadium. As both students were engaged in competition, a physical altercation ensued, resulting in the tragic incident.

Karmelo Anthony, 17, has been charged with first-degree murder, asserting that he was acting in self-defense during the confrontation. He is currently detained at the Collins County Jail under a bond of $1 million, which his legal representative is seeking to reduce.

Anthony’s attorney, Deric Walpole, commented on the situation, emphasizing the importance of understanding the facts. “I know that my client said it was self-defense. I don’t have any reason to disbelieve that, but I need to develop facts, talk to people and figure out what’s going on before I make any statements about what I think happened,” Walpole stated. “I don’t have any reason to think it wasn’t self-defense at this time.”

Supporters of Anthony have taken to the GiveSendGo platform to voice their opinions. Many have expressed their belief in his right to self-defense, drawing parallels to other high-profile cases. Comments reflect a mixture of personal support and criticisms of social injustices, with some suggesting that underlying racial issues may have contributed to the incident.

One donor noted, “Self-defense in a stand your ground state this young man did nothing wrong and has the right to defend himself as the legal system said it was right for Daniel Penny and Kyle Rittenhouse it’s right for him too.” Another remarked on the broader societal issues at play, stating, “Stay strong young brother, all of us that have come up in this country hope to never go through this or see others like us go through this, but it is an unfortunate reality… Let your legal be the fight one of the many victories in this seemingly eternal fight against racism and evil.”
