Giza, Egypt’s third-largest city by area, is positioned on the west bank of the Nile River, which flows northward along the right side of the image. This river serves as a natural divider, separating Giza from its eastern neighbor, Cairo. A number of bridges facilitate travel between these two significant urban centers.
The Nile River, often referred to as the father of African rivers, holds the title of the longest river in the world. Its banks provide fertile lands that have supported Egyptian agriculture, enabling civilization to flourish in an otherwise dry desert environment.
In the image, the vibrant green agricultural lands contrast sharply with the grey of Giza’s urban sprawl. To the southwest, the arid tones of yellow and ochre indicate the sandy expanses of the desert and the Giza Plateau, which is home to some of the most remarkable ancient structures globally.
The iconic silhouette of the Great Pyramids of Giza is prominently displayed in the lower section of the image, illuminated by sunlight, casting striking shadows. The northernmost and largest of these pyramids is that of Khufu, also known as Cheops, which dates back to around 2600 BC, making it the oldest of the trio. The middle pyramid belongs to Pharaoh Khafre, while the smallest, the southernmost, is that of Menkaure, constructed approximately in 2510 BC.
On closer inspection, smaller pyramids adjacent to those of Cheops and Menkaure can be identified, serving as burial sites for other members of the royal family. Additionally, mortuary temples, represented by square structures, are situated near each of the main pyramids. Not far from the Khafre pyramid, the Great Sphinx is also discernible, marking one of Egypt’s most celebrated landmarks.
Approximately 2 kilometers northwest of the pyramids lies the Grand Egyptian Museum, identifiable by its unique white, rhomboid structure surrounded by spacious plazas adorned with date palms. Spanning 50 hectares, this institution is recognized as the world’s largest archaeological museum.
The image was captured by the Vision-1 mission, which is capable of providing imagery with resolutions up to 0.87 meters. Vision-1 operates under the ESA’s Third Party Missions programme, enabling the European Space Agency to leverage its multi-mission ground systems and expertise for acquiring, processing, distributing, and archiving satellite data from various international agencies.
