Google’s CEO Highlights DeepSeek’s Affordable AI Innovation
During the World Governments Summit held in Dubai, Google CEO Sundar Pichai commended the Chinese AI startup, DeepSeek, for its remarkable achievement in developing a competitive AI model for less than $6 million. This stands in stark contrast to the industry benchmark, which often exceeds $100 million.
Pichai remarked, “I think the DeepSeek team has done very, very good work,” emphasizing the significance of their accomplishments in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
He noted that Google gleaned important insights from DeepSeek’s meteoric rise, particularly its recent success in dominating the charts of the Apple App Store and Google Play. Pichai highlighted the global nature of AI competition, stating, “DeepSeek’s innovation reinforces that point.”
Additionally, Pichai praised DeepSeek’s model for its efficiency and the accuracy of its results, achieved with minimal computational resources. According to DeepSeek’s technical report, the company utilized only 2,000 AI chips to train its model. This is significantly fewer than the more than 16,000 chips employed by Meta for its latest AI projects.
The correlation between chip usage and associated costs is evident. Analyst Pierre Ferragu from New Street Research remarked to The New York Times that Google had invested between $2 billion and $3 billion last year to produce a million custom AI chips. In contrast, Amazon allocated $200 million towards developing 100,000 AI chips.
Moreover, DeepSeek’s model operates on an open-source basis, allowing developers around the globe to access and enhance its technology, fostering a collaborative environment for AI development.
Pichai noted, “What caught people’s attention with DeepSeek was that you could have an efficient model and open-source access, creating a lot of excitement.” He reiterated Google’s commitment to efficiency in its own AI endeavors.
Recently, Google introduced its Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite AI model, which Pichai described as the company’s “most cost-efficient model yet,” although details regarding the development costs remain undisclosed.
As the AI sector continues to grow, the competition among tech giants and startups alike promises to yield innovations that may reshape the landscape of artificial intelligence.
