Google’s Gemini Usage Lags Behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT

As the adoption of Google’s Gemini platform continues to rise, the company is still not on pace to surpass its competitor, OpenAI. Recent analyses reveal that Google’s scrutiny of ChatGPT user engagement is well-founded, particularly as OpenAI’s platform experiences its own growth trajectory, boasting approximately 600 million active users each month. Earlier estimates from this year had ChatGPT’s monthly user count around 400 million.

When analyzing web traffic, it’s important to note that various metrics can yield differing interpretations. Recently, OpenAI reported weekly user engagement numbers that reached as high as 400 million, although companies often select specific seven-day spans from a month to present these figures as weekly active users. By comparison, a monthly metric tends to provide a clearer picture, especially as Google appears to employ reliable data in what is an already challenging legal landscape for the tech giant.

The race to accumulate users is a common goal among all firms in the AI sector; however, this achievement does not equate to a straightforward victory akin to what retail or social media platforms might experience. Each user interacting with Gemini or ChatGPT incurs substantial costs for these companies due to the high computational demands of generative AI technology. While Google remains tight-lipped regarding revenue or losses generated from its Gemini subscriptions, OpenAI has openly acknowledged operating at a loss even with its high-tier $200 monthly plan. Thus, while widening the user base is crucial for the long-term viability of these AI products, it simultaneously leads to increased expenditures unless the costs associated with running extensive AI models are significantly reduced.
