What you need to know

Google Drive has introduced a new feature that allows users to watch videos immediately after they are uploaded, eliminating the frustrating wait times that previously accompanied this process. Although this update is a significant enhancement, users will still need to wait for video processing to be completed before they can share the videos.

According to a recent announcement on the Google Workspace blog, instant video playback is now live for users accessing Google Drive via the web. While the technical specifics were not elaborated upon, initial reports indicate that the function works seamlessly.

Previously, uploading a video to Google Drive required users to wait for a transcoding phase, where videos would be converted into a format compatible with the Drive player. This process often resulted in prolonged delays, keeping content creators on standby instead of allowing them to engage with their uploads right away.

With this upgrade, users can begin watching their videos immediately upon completion of the upload. This marks a notable enhancement in the overall user experience.

As cloud storage services like Google Drive continue to evolve, they now offer a variety of advanced features built around the foundational concept of file upload and retrieval. The competitive landscape has driven these platforms to improve and diversify their functionalities, including enhanced sharing capabilities.

In addition to this latest improvement, Google Drive previously upgraded its media player to include features like auto-transcriptions and faster video loading. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to minimize delays associated with video content.

Despite the advancements, users still face a limitation, as they must await the completion of the processing before they can share their newly uploaded videos using Drive’s player.

Google has announced that this new feature is accessible to a broad audience, including all Google Workspace customers, individual Workspace subscribers, and personal account holders. Currently, the functionality is available to users within the Rapid Release domains, with plans for a wider rollout scheduled to commence on January 2, 2025.
