What you need to know

Google is discontinuing support for its first and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats. Starting October 25, 2025, these models will no longer receive software updates, nor will they support remote control capabilities. Furthermore, Google has announced that no new Nest Learning Thermostat devices will be available for purchase in Europe.

In a recent community post dated April 25, 2025, Google outlined these transitions affecting users with older models. The company will provide discounts for these users who wish to upgrade to the 4th-generation Nest Learning Thermostat.

The upcoming changes signify that both the 1st and 2nd-generation models will not only lose access to software enhancements but also functionality related to Google Assistant. While the devices will still operate as standard thermostats, the smart features will be deactivated in the fall.

“We’re incredibly excited about the future of Nest and the innovative experiences we’re building for your smart home,” stated Google. “To fully invest in advancements and bring you the most cutting-edge features on our latest generation of Nest thermostats, we will be transitioning away from supporting three of our oldest devices, each over a decade old.”

Google reassured users that all other Nest thermostat models will remain unaffected and continue to receive security updates. The company also plans to introduce scheduling capabilities for these devices through the Google Home app for the first time later this year.

To facilitate the transition, U.S. customers will receive a substantial discount of $130 on the new 4th-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, lowering the price to $149.99 (down from the MSRP of $279.99). In Canada, the discount amounts to $160, making the new thermostat available for $219.99 (reduced from the MSRP of $379.99 CAD).

While European customers will not be able to purchase a new Nest Thermostat, Google is providing a 50% discount on compatible third-party thermostats that support Google Home.

Why is Google no longer selling Nest Learning Thermostats in Europe?

In its announcement, Google clarified that it will cease selling new Nest Learning Thermostat models in Europe. However, the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E will continue to be available in Europe until supplies are exhausted. Afterward, it will be up to third-party Google Home partners to provide alternative options.

“Heating systems in Europe are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that complicate product development for the diverse range of homes,” Google explained. “Consequently, we will no longer introduce new Nest thermostats to the European market.”
