What you need to know
Google is implementing an update for Gmail that enhances its integration with the Calendar application through the AI, Gemini. This improvement is set to introduce an “Add to Calendar” button, which users will see when pivotal dates and times are identified in their emails. The event can easily be added, and users will have the flexibility to modify any details as needed. Additionally, Google has recently furnished Calendar with a dedicated Gemini side panel, enabling users to effortlessly view their weekly schedules and manage event creation.
The rollout of this quality of life update aims to streamline the handling of significant information within Gmail, making it more user-friendly.
Google made the announcement through a Workspace blog post, which emphasizes the central role of Gemini in this new functionality. According to the update, users will encounter an “Add to Calendar” button adorned with a Gemini symbol when the AI scans an email for relevant dates, highlighting any that are significant.
By clicking the “Add to Calendar” option, users will be directed to a side panel that mimics a dialogue with Gemini, explaining the actions taken. For example, the AI might announce that it has established an event labeled “Field Visit” on a particular date. This interface will provide a link to the calendar with details about the event’s title and timing, alongside an edit icon for any adjustments needed.
Through this method, users can effectively make modifications or add information to their events.
Google has pointed out a few critical points regarding this feature: it is currently exclusive to Gmail users accessing the web platform in English, and any calendar event created via AI will not include guests. Moreover, the automatic add function will not trigger for events that have already been recognized, such as flights or restaurant reservations.
The availability of this feature is limited to Workspace Business and Enterprise users on starter, standard, or plus plans, as well as those with the Gemini Education and Education Premium add-ons and Google One AI Premium subscribers. The complete rollout is anticipated to conclude by mid-April for users on both rapid and scheduled release domains.
This new development, facilitating better interaction between Gmail and Calendar through the Gemini AI, follows a recent enhancement that integrated a dedicated AI panel into Calendar. According to a support document, Gemini in Calendar can assist users with various tasks, including reviewing their schedules and making notes. After activating the panel, users can request Gemini to assess their upcoming week’s agenda, receiving highlights in response.
Additionally, the “Create” command allows users to instruct Gemini to set up or add recurring activities, like a weekly run or lunch meetings.
Bringing a Gemini side panel to the Calendar web app aligns with Google’s broader objectives, as discussed during the initial Labs test last year. By utilizing Gemini 1.5 Pro, the AI is specifically designed to support users across Google applications such as Gmail, Docs, Calendar, and more, facilitating an enhanced user experience tailored to their specific tasks.
