What you need to know
Google is making a concerted effort to promote the Palm Timer feature, as highlighted by recent updates this month. A new community post has been released to inform Pixel users that this handy timer can be utilized with both front and rear cameras, following an update to the Pixel Camera app (version 9.8) that added clarifying language about this feature.
This initiative includes multiple outreach efforts to ensure Pixel users are aware that the Palm Timer functions seamlessly with both camera options. The recent camera app update not only refines the settings menu wording but also reinforces the usability of the feature through the aforementioned community post, clarifying its multi-camera functionality.
For those who are not yet acquainted with it, Palm Timer is a unique feature exclusive to Pixel devices that starts a photo timer by recognizing when you display your palm to the camera. Initially designed for use with the front camera and the Pixel Fold, it has since expanded its compatibility to include the Pixel 6 and later models, enabling its use with both camera types.
While the positive feedback indicates that users can easily see the timer activation confirmation when using the front camera, it’s important to note that there is no visual indicator for photos taken with the rear camera on standard models. Nevertheless, Google emphasizes that Palm Timer functionality is indeed available for both configurations.
The community post emphasizes the convenience this feature offers, stating, “Say goodbye to awkward selfie sticks and the stress of racing to beat the timer. With Google Pixel’s Palm Timer, you can effortlessly include everyone in your group selfies from a distance.” This captures the essence of the feature’s utility, as it allows for easy engagement and photography.
To activate the Palm Timer, users simply need to lift their hand toward the camera, even a casual wave will suffice. Lowering the hand signals the start of the countdown, making it a practical method for capturing images on the Pixel, especially when it is positioned on a flat surface or tripod at a distance.
By default, Palm Timer is enabled. However, if you wish to disable it, you can do so by accessing the Pixel Camera app and navigating to Settings > More settings > Palm timer. This provides users the flexibility to customize their photography experience.
