Restricted view allows for more control
Gmail is introducing a restricted view option aimed at enhancing security for sensitive communications. While the default experience allows users to receive decrypted emails without any intervention if they are the designated recipients, administrators have the authority to enable this restrictive mode for all users. This measure ensures that important emails are not inadvertently stored on third-party servers or devices.
This feature mandates authentication through an approved account and identity provider, allowing organizations to swiftly revoke access and implement additional security protocols as necessary. Google likens this experience to sharing a document through Google Drive, emphasizing a controlled environment for communication.
Julien Duplant, a product manager at Google Workspace, highlighted the structural benefits of this approach. He stated, “At a structural level, this approach offers more comprehensive encryption protection. It doesn’t matter who you send a message to or what email they are using; your message will be encrypted, and you are in sole control. There’s just one set of keys, and you’re the only one who has them.” This reinforces the user’s ownership of their communication security, ensuring greater peace of mind in an era where data privacy is paramount.
